Hispano Suiza H6B cabriolet de ville by Hibbard & Darrin 1929
2014 Concours d'Elegance Paleis het Loo - Apeldoorn (NL)
The surprising winner of the international concours. Despite the brand name indicating Spain and Switzerland this famous car was manufactured in Colombes near Paris, France. The H6B model featured a 6.6 litre 6-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft that produced around 135 bhp and was the first production car to have power assisted brakes on all four wheels. Its bodywork was built to order and in this case by Hibbard & Darrin.
Thomas Hibbard and Howard Darrin were two American designers who moved to Paris in 1922 and set up a coach building company in 1926. Their designs were quite fashionable and sometimes exuberant. This "cabriolet de ville" however appears relatively formal. Hibbard left for America in 1931 and Darrin continued the company as Fernandez & Darrin. In 1937 Darrin also returned to America and became a well known designer for Packard. His name was immortalized in 1954 when he designed an iconic 2-seater sports car that went into production as the Kaiser Darrin.
