Slaby Beringer DKW 3 PS 1924
2016 Techno Classica - Essen (D)

This miniature car might seem like a coffin on cycle wheels but it was in fact quite advanced at the time. Rudolf Slaby and Hermann Beringer started building small electric cars for invalids in Berlin, Germany in 1919. These featured a self-supporting body construction made of wood. This construction caught the interest of motorcycle manufacturer DKW, which invested in the company. In 1923 a version powered by a DKW 2-stroke engine was introduced, like you see on this picture. Unfortunately it wasn't successful and after 266 cars with DKW engine were manufactured the company had to close its doors in 1924.
Rudolf Slaby continued to work for DKW and developed the first DKW car which was introduced in 1928 and shared a number of features with the Slaby Beringer car, like a self-supporting body made of wood, but this time on a larger scale and in a more conventional shape.
