2019 Techno Classica - Essen (D)

The 3.5 Liter model 235 was the last model produced by Delahaye. Presented in 1951 it was still largely based on pre-war technology but updated to compete with models from other traditional French luxury car manufacturers like Talbot-Lago and Hotchkiss. An upgrade to 3 Solex carburettors meant that the venerable 6 cylinder engine now produced a credible 152 hp at 4200 rpm, enough for a top speed of 181 kph. Delahaye only made chassis to be fitted with bespoke bodies by external coach builders. This made the cars very expensive and until to the end in 1954 only 84 cars of the model 235 were sold.
Here you see the car that was shown on the 1953 Paris Motor Show (chassis #818075) with the so-called "bubble coupe" body by Henri Chapron. A typical French sculptural design, elegant and attractive, illustrating the Grand Routier tradition that became more or less extinct shortly after.
