The Pontiac brand was introduced in 1926 by General Motors as a more affordable companion car to the Oakland. As such it became so successful that it overshadowed the sales of Oakland and by 1932 Oakland was absorbed into Pontiac. Up to then Pontiac cars were powered by 6 cylinder engines. In 1932 the Oakland V8 was added and in 1933 both 6 cylinder and V8 models were replaced by the Series 601 Economy Eight which had a new straight 8 cylinder engine. It was a step back from the more modern V8 configuration and sort of middle ground between the old straight 6's simplicity and the more supple 8 cylinders of the former Oakland.
This new affordable 8 cylinder model proved to be a big success: where in 1932 the combined sales of the 6 and 8 cylinder Pontiac models amounted to 41,340 the production total of the 1933 Economy Eight was 90,198 cars.
Styling wise the Economy Eight was a simple but presentable car with the rakish roadster model being the most appealing. But in this unusual silver color scheme the 2-door sedan looks good too.
