Iso Varedo showcar 1972
2017 Classic Days Schloss Dyck - Aldenhoven (D)

The first and last Iso cars caught in one picture: the small car in the back is the iconic Iso Isetta from 1953, later immortalized by BMW as they produced this model in license, and in front the Iso Varedo prototype, which was the last new design shown by the company before it closed its doors in 1974.
Engineer Giotto Bizzarrini developed this new car, which was to have a tubular chassis bonded with a fiberglass body and a longitudinally placed Ford Cleveland V8 engine behind the seats. Body design was done by company owner Piero Rivolta in collaboration with former Zagato designer Ercole Spada. The style and concept of the Varedo (named after the new production location of Iso) seems to anticipate the later Lamborghini Countach.
The car shown here is a non running prototype for the 1972 Turin Motor Show. Apparently a second Varedo was built which did run and was tested but seems to have disappeared. Due to financial problems the Varedo never reached production status. I wonder what would have happened, after some fine-tuning, if it had. Would Iso have survived?
