Derek Bennett is perhaps not as well known as Colin Chapman (Lotus) or Eric Broadley (Lola) but he was a British racing car constructor of a similar breed. Under the Chevron brand name Bennett produced a wide range of single seaters and sports cars from 1965 till his untimely death in 1978. Most of his cars competed in classes with smaller engines and there was never a Formula 1 car (apart from a prototype) which probably made Chevron less noted than Lotus or Lola.
Never the less there were many successful Chevron race cars, and the B16 is one of the most famous. For a part because it was a very good looking looking sports car which inspired many kit car designs in the following years, but also because it was very competitive. It was originally made between 1969 and 1970, mostly as a Group 6 prototype sports car with engines up to 2 Litre displacement. One car was fitted with a Mazda Rotary engine; in total 23 original cars were made of which one was a open top spider. The B16 was also the first racing car to have a "crash box" in front, to protect the drivers feet.
I think it's a beautiful car and was surprised by its small size: extremely low and with a cockpit that's just a bit larger than the driver's helmet. As a testament to the popularity of this model you can still order a new one to be built today, exactly as it was made in the early 1970s.
