Zandvoort Masters 1999:
The Libertel Dutch Touring Car Championship
Marcel Alderden
paid dearly for his obstructive driving: in one of the last laps Euser pushed him out of
the way and Alderden only managed to finish in 16th place.
By pushing Alderden out of the
way Cor Euser finished in 2nd place, a great and in my opinion well deserved result. But
then the Renault team protested and the men in suits (BoBos as they're called in Holland)
decided to disqualify poor Euser.
Euser was taken out of the overall classification and obtained no championship points in
this race. But Euser retaliated in the way he always does: by winning the championship in
the following races...
Toon van de Haterd
drove well in his first race of the season but stressed the brand new Honda engine too
much until it gave up on him.
Gentleman
driver Kalff took full advantage of all the mayhem around him. He drove a clean and
strategic race as always and after the demise of Van de Haterd, the off-track excursion of
Coronel and the disqualification of Euser he ultimately ended up in second place.
Kalff is one of the few drivers in this class with driving skills up to an international
standard. Nowadays he's best known as a sports commentator on both Dutch TV and Eurosport
(Dutch as well as English) and he's close friends with F 1 ace Johnny Herbert. Some years
back he won championship titles in European Formula Ford 1600 and Opel Lotus series, but
lack of money (and probably motivation) kept him from breaking through to higher ranked
classes.
Rob Karst is not as
distinguished as Kalff but drove an impeccable race. He took the lead from the start and
didn't make mistakes. This paid off in the end, he won this DTCC race with a 4 second gap
to Euser and 8 seconds to Kalff. It took him 33 minutes and 11 seconds to complete the 16
laps, averaging a speed of 124.379 kph. Unfortunately his Integra didn't prove as reliable
in the following races.
Donald Molenaar took 3rd place with his Renault Mégane Coupé in this
tumultuous and somewhat dissatisfying race. The spectators looking for accidents and
sensational driving were well served; the ones looking for good and proper racing had a
hard time taking this race serious. If anyone had to be disqualified it should have been
Pim van Riet who collided with almost everything on the track. And Alderden was almost as
much to blame for Euser pushing him off the track as Euser himself. No, it wasn't a very
good day for the Renault DTCC team at all....
